Did You Book Your Home Under the Affordable Housing Scheme Yet?

In the year 2015, the Government of India had made announcements of planning to set up 20 million households by the year 2020. Under the scheme known as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, it was decided that measures will be taken to offer affordable housing scheme to the underprivileged, lower, and middle-income groups in all metros and non-metros in India. Unfortunately, however, a recent study showed that only a couple of hundred citizens had availed this scheme.

To sum it up, under this affordable housing scheme, the properties allotted to a person will depend largely on the size of the unit, the price of the unit, and the annual income of the household. Let us discuss some of the important features of these scheme:

Characteristics of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

Basically, to apply for a home under these scheme, you must be aware of these simple yet significant clauses:

  • One house to one family – A single family is eligible to a single house. Also, none of the family members should have availed any other housing scheme from the government. However, an adult earning member can be treated as a separate individual if he/she doesn’t own a pucca house under their name anywhere in the country.
  • Size of the unit – The size of the unit will be calculated based on the carpet area and will not include the thickness of the walls.
  • Classification of households – While MIG – I households are classified as those who earn an annual income of INR 6 to 12 lakhs, MIG – II households are those who earn between INR 12 to 18 lakhs. Consequentially, MIG – I category citizens are eligible to get a loan of up to INR 9 lakhs whereas MIG -II category citizens can avail up to INR 12 lakhs.

Under the affordable housing scheme, housing projects in New Delhi will range between INR 7 lakhs to INR 45 lakhs and will incorporate 360 apartments in the first phase, of which 33% are reserved for women if they choose to apply for them. Similarly, for Ghaziabad, the plan incorporates 25,000 budget homes.
